Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community has been experiencing racial violence across the world. And in the last few weeks, violence has escalated: an 84-year-old Thai man shoved on his morning walk and died a few days after; a 64-year-old Vietnamese woman attacked in San Jose; and a 61-year-old Filipino man’s face was slashed on a NYC subway. These are a mere fraction of incidents that have been occurring over and over in the last year, but are finally getting traction in mainstream media.
In 2020, it’s been reported that hate crimes against AAPI have jumped 1,900% in NYC alone. Stop AAPI Hate received more than 3,000 reports of U.S. anti-Asian discrimination. Despite raising our voices last year, it’s only become a “trending topic” now. In the future, we can’t wait for violent incidents to “trend” for them to matter.
